Sustainability Statement

My recommendations to make a difference.

As a fashion stylist, understanding the impact of sustainability within fashion is more important than ever before. The environmental impact of clothing is certainly on everyone’s radar, after all, the fashion industry could be responsible for up to 10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

Fashion sustainability is a phrase that conveys the efforts of clothing producers to limit the environmental impact of clothing production (limiting pollution, improving human rights, and eliminating worker exploitation, reducing CO2 emissions, being more responsible with production volumes, addressing the ‘elephants in the room of fashion waste and excesses’ and spreading awareness of the importance of sustainability for consumers to change consumer behaviours.

During my career, I have been involved with sustainability within commercial fashion for many years and bring my passion for this into my styling.

Purchasing ‘sustainable’ fashion is a start, however, we can all do more.

My recommendations to make a difference:

Focus on quality over quantity. Before purchasing, consider if you'll wear the item at least 30 times, if it's truly necessary, and why you're buying it. Can you repurpose something you already own? Opt for durable, high-quality materials over disposable fashion.

Be discerning about what you buy. Over 50% of global clothing is made from synthetic materials like nylon and polyester, which are not only slow to degrade but can also be environmentally damaging during production and disposal. While natural fabrics are preferable, their production can still impact the environment. Look for sustainable options like organic cotton, which uses no pesticides and less water, and ensure even natural materials like viscose and leather are sourced responsibly.

Research brands thoroughly. Many brands claim sustainability, but their statements can be vague or misleading. Investigate their sustainability practices and transparency in their supply chain. During my tenure at Next, we focused on improving worker conditions, responsible sourcing, and establishing best practices in garment production.

Support sustainable fashion brands. Choose brands committed to reducing pollution and improving the environment, and check if they have clear goals like emission reduction deadlines.

Consider second-hand or vintage shopping to extend the lifecycle of garments and reduce your environmental footprint. You can also repurpose or alter your existing clothing to refresh your wardrobe sustainably.

Rent clothing, especially for one-time wear like formal events, but inquire about the cleaning processes to avoid environmentally harmful methods.

Care for your clothes properly. Maintaining your garments through proper washing and repairs can extend their life, making them eligible for resale, donation, or repurposing. If an item is beyond repair, recycle it responsibly.
